During pregnancy

Can I get pregnancy allowance?

You can get pregnancy allowance if

  • you are a parent giving birth to a child
  • your pregnancy has lasted at least 154 days

If your employer pays you a salary during your pregnancy leave, the pregnancy allowance is paid to your employer. However, you must still submit your application for pregnancy allowance to Kela.

If your working conditions pose a risk to your pregnancy and you have to stay off work before your pregnancy leave begins, you can apply for special pregnancy allowance. Learn more about the special pregnancy allowance.

For what period can I get pregnancy allowance?

You can start your pregnancy leave 14–30 working days before the expected due date of the baby.

Kela pays pregnancy allowance for 40 working days regardless of the actual date of birth of the baby. Pregnancy allowance days must be taken consecutively and cannot be postponed until later.

If your baby is born before you have started your pregnancy leave, payment of pregnancy allowance will start immediately on the working day following the day the baby is born.

If you are working, you must inform your employer of your pregnancy leave no later than two months before the start of your leave. Agree with your employer on when you will start your pregnancy leave. You should also find out if your employer will pay you a salary during your pregnancy leave.

When is pregnancy allowance paid out?

Pregnancy allowance is paid in arrears every 25 days. You can check the exact payment date in the OmaKela e-service (available in Finnish and Swedish) once you have received a decision on pregnancy allowance.

How to apply for pregnancy allowance

First, visit the maternity and child health clinic (neuvola) and ask for a certificate of pregnancy indicating that your pregnancy has lasted for at least 154 days. You do not need to submit a certificate of pregnancy if you have already submitted it with your application for the maternity grant.

You can apply for pregnancy allowance either on a form or in the OmaKela e-service. OmaKela is currently only available in Finnish and Swedish. Kela’s forms are also available in English.

If your employer pays you a salary during your pregnancy leave, you will not receive a decision on your application until your employer has submitted their separate application to Kela.

Apply in OmaKela

  1. Apply for pregnancy allowance in the OmaKela e-service (available in Finnish and Swedish). You can apply for maternity grant and the parental allowance paid after the pregnancy allowance at the same time.

Other situations during pregnancy allowance

Report changes that affect your pregnancy allowance

The pregnancy allowance can be affected by changes such as starting work during pregnancy leave. When you report the changes, the benefit is paid at the correct rate and you also do not lose any benefit due to you. Read more about reporting changes.

If you do not report changes, you may be paid benefits you are not entitled to. In that case the benefit will be recovered from you later. Read more about the recovery of overpaid benefits.

Do not forget to check how any changes in your circumstances will affect other benefits that you receive from Kela.

After pregnancy leave

After your pregnancy leave you can take parental leave and get parental allowance.

The other parent who is staying at home caring for your child can also take parental leave. You can also work part-time and get partial parental allowance.
