Benefits available from Kela

The benefits available from Kela cover a wide range of situations. For example, Kela provides financial assistance to families with children, students, people of working age, and pensioners. Kela can also provide benefits in the event of illness, incapacity and functional impairment.

Who can get benefits from Kela?

Most Kela benefits are available in situations where your ability to earn a living or to keep working has declined. You can also get benefits in specific situations of life, such as childbirth or when a young person starts studying.

Benefits in the Åland Islands

Åland is an autonomous region whose social security legislation differs in part from mainland Finland. If you live in the Åland Islands, you must apply for some benefits from Kela and some from municipalities and local operators in the Åland Islands. Local operators include:

Kela's telephone service also provides service to persons living in the Åland Islands. There is a Kela customer service point in Mariehamn, which you can visit by appointment.

Persons living in the Åland Islands can apply for most benefits in the same way as persons living in mainland Finland. However, in the following situations, some benefits are applied for differently in the Åland Islands than in mainland Finland.

How much is my benefit?

The amounts of the benefits available from Kela are laid down in law. The amount of your benefit often depends on your personal situation, your income and expenses, the municipality you live in, and the degree to which you need help.

More information about the amount and payment of benefits is available on the pages describing the individual benefits.

Do not forget to check how any changes in your circumstances will affect other benefits that you receive from Kela.

Calculate the amount of assistance that may be available to you

You can use online calculators to estimate whether you might be eligible for Kela benefits. The calculators will also tell you how much you could get. Please remember that the calculators can only provide an estimate, which is based on the information you supply. You will find out the exact amount when your benefit application has been approved by Kela.

How to apply for Kela benefits

The benefits provided by Kela are usually available on application only. The only exceptions are the reimbursements of medical, pharmaceutical and travel expenses, which are available as direct, on-the-spot reimbursements.

Before applying

Before you complete an application

  • learn more about the benefit you are claiming on its dedicated webpage
  • use a benefit calculator to find out if you are eligible
  • check what additional information or documentation you must supply with your application
  • when necessary, contact our customer service.

Application

There is a specific application for each benefit. Almost all Kela benefits can be applied for via the OmaKela e-service. OmaKela is currently only available in Finnish and Swedish.

Another way to apply for Kela benefits is to use a PDF form. Most of our forms are available in English. Kela’s forms are available in English. Many of the forms can be sent via OmaKela or the forms can be sent to Kela by mail. More detailed application instructions are available on the web pages for each benefit.

Complete the application as carefully as you can and enclose the necessary supporting documents. You can help to avoid delays with the processing of your application by providing all of the necessary information and documents. Read more about application processing times.

If you are unable to submit a written application, you can do so by phone or by visiting a service point. You can also authorise another person to manage your Kela-related affairs for you.

Once Kela has processed your application, you will receive a decision.
